Brian,

Glad you find this helpful.

The Metis drive - serves as an instant backup of whatever is on the Week-old Gena.

Once something comes to Metis - it is automatically replicated over to my off-site Plato. [So you're correct - that's the VPN'ed drive]

As far as being concerned about being able to restore anything over 1-week, then the answer is no, as I tend to be fairly careful in what I delete, and once I do - I tend not to want to be bothered by it again.
What you're after it seems - is an ability to create countless [space-permitting] snapshots of your data.

There are two ways of achieving that:
- Shadow copy within Windows
- TimeMachine in OSX

The latter is what I use now for snapshots, and once uni settles down a little - will post about the modified backup solution I now use in OSX.

Hope that helps,

Cheers,

I find this sort of thing very helpful and appreciate the effort you put into sharing your backup strategy. I just have two questions:
First, what's the role of the Metis drive? As best I can tell, Gena is the third drive in the server that your RAID array backs up to weekly (step 5). And Plato must be the 500 GB drive that you connect to with a site-to-site VPN. Is Metis another (i.e., fourth) drive in the server, serving as a backup of the week-old backup?
Second, are you concerned about being able to restore anything that you deleted or lost more than a week earlier? For me the hardest part of developing a backup strategy is determining how much I should replicate (back up) my current set of data versus how much I should create snapshots of my data set over time.
